I grew up watching cricket and playing cricket with the boys during lunchtime in prep school. If you grew up anywhere in the Caribbean, chances are West Indies cricket was a part of your life in one way or another. Despite that, I had never actually attended a live cricket match. So when a friend invited me to Mound Mania at Sabina Park for the first ODI between the West Indies and Sri Lanka, I immediately said yes.
For those who aren't familiar, Mound Mania is an all-inclusive ticket experience that gives you access to food, drinks, entertainment, and of course, the cricket. And honestly, what could be better than watching live cricket with a cold drink in your hand and great company around you?

One thing I quickly learned is that ODI cricket is an all-day affair. The match I attended lasted almost nine hours, making the all-inclusive experience even more worthwhile. Having food and drinks readily available throughout the day made it easy to settle in, relax, and enjoy the atmosphere without having to worry about finding refreshments.
The cricket wasn't the only entertainment. Mound Mania had a lively party atmosphere, complete with a DJ spinning music throughout the day and dancers keeping the energy high between overs. It felt like the perfect blend of sport and Caribbean vibes.
The weather was especially hot that day, so my drink of choice quickly became Red Stripe Lemon. Served over a cup of ice, it was easily the most refreshing thing I had all afternoon. Premium options such as Appleton Estate rum were also available for purchase, although they were not included with the Mound Mania ticket.

For lunch, we were served barbe-fry chicken with rolls, catered by Mother's. The meal was surprisingly filling and kept me satisfied well into the evening innings.

As for the cricket itself, there were plenty of exciting moments throughout the match, even though the West Indies ultimately came up short against Sri Lanka. Of course, I would have loved to see a West Indies victory, but the overall experience more than made up for the result.
For my first live cricket match, I couldn't have asked for a better introduction. Between the cricket, the music, the food, the drinks, and the vibrant atmosphere, Mound Mania turned a sporting event into a full-day celebration.

If you're a cricket fan or even someone simply looking for a uniquely Jamaican experience, I would definitely recommend adding Mound Mania to your list. It's the perfect way to enjoy a day at Sabina Park while soaking up the energy, culture, and camaraderie that make Caribbean cricket so special.
