Not alot of Jamaicans like Jackfruit because it stains but let me share something with you, I am obessed with Jackfruit. It has to be my favorite fruit ever! It all started when I was a little girl when I lived with my grandparents for a few years. My grandparents lived in the country and in their backyard they had a farm. Occassionally my grandfather would take me into the woods where I would help him with picking fruits or vegetables. Eventually I had to move back to the city but every year I would visit my grandparents and the first thing I would ask is if any jackfruit bore. I could sit and eat an entire jackfruit all by myself. I sound greedy, don't?
Years have gone by and in the city it's kind of difficult to come across jackfruit. It's not like they sell it in the supermarkets and going to market I would never find any. Fast forward to to present day and I found Jackfruit chips. Now if your like me you wonder to yourself how the hell would that work and how can it be real to have jackfruit chips.
Firstly, I can't pronounce the name of that brand but it's made in Vietnam. Upon researching this product I came across other jackfruit products such as lemon garlic jackfruit, BBQ jackfruit, curry jackfruit, teriyaki jackfruit, and tex mex jackfruit. I think you know where I'm going with this. In countries like Vietnam and Thailand jackfruit is used in vegan diets. So it can be eaten raw or cooked. Yes, I said cooked! Shocked me too. I had no idea people cooked jackfruit. This is something definitely to explore. I'm going to try a jackfruit cooked dish and share with you in a later post how that turned out. Maybe BBQ Jackfruit? Jackfruit Tacos? 🤔 I'll decide soon enough.
Let's talk flavor. I was a little hesitant to try it but surprisingly it tasted good. At first it had the crunchiness of chips but as I continued chewing I started tasting the jackfruit and feeling the jackfruit texture in my mouth. So apparently how they make jackfruit into chips is that its vacuumed dried (which is dehydrating or removing water from the fruit) but believe me it tastes really good and can easily become addictive. I think its slightly lightly sugared because it tastes sweet. Jackfruit is naturally sweet but I find it hard to believe it was salt on my fingers after eating the jackfruit chips. 😂
Here's a fun fact about jackfruit, it can grow to be very big and weight up to 100 pounds! That's huge and heavy. I'm sure if your able to get your hands on a huge jackfruit, that can probably make meals for a month for one person!
Jackfruit has many health benefits which include:
Improving your immunity system as it contains high amounts of vitamin C and antioxidants.
Gives you a boost of energy as it has good carbohydrates and the sugars in jackfruit makes it easy to digest.
Improves cardiovascular health and blood pressure as it is rich is potassium.
As I mentioned before it improves digestion as jackfruit contains solubale and insoluble fibers. Soluble fibre is broken down quickly to produce energy and the insoluble fiber adds bulk to your stool to easing up your bowel movement.
Jackfruit allegedly prevents cancer as it is rich in antioxidants, phytonutrients and flavonoids.
Other mentions - it improves vision, prevents aging, strengthens bones, improves blood quality, treat fever and skin diseases.
